Achievements of IMC
IMC was established to create an environment and culture that is conducive tor achieving excellence in not only academic and research field but also in creativity and innovativeness. Since its inception, the institution has successfully contributed towards excellence in medical education and research. A few of these are mentioned below:
• IMC started its journey in the year 2002 and will admit the 13th batch in 2014. Since its inception, many students of IMC have secured merit positions and distinctions (honors) in the Professional MBBS examinations underthe Dhaka University.
• Students from IM1 to IM 5 are eligible to pursue higher academic courses. IM 6 and IM7 are undergoing internships. A record number of our students have entered the post graduate courses, both at home and abroad. Many have already finished their courses.
• Apart from the academic accomplishments, the students of IMC have already shown their brilliance in extracurricular activities in the national and international arena. They have participated in national debate competitions and secured prizes. IMC students took part in an International Quiz Competition in Physiology held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the last week of August 2013.
• IMC is regularly publishing a high quality IMC Medical Journal for the last 7 years. The journal is indexed in ISSBN and is web linked to Bangia Jol (a web based data base for Bangladeshi medical journals).
• As a part of its commitment towards excellence in research, IMC has established an annual research fund of Taka 2.5 million for its faculty development. Allocation of such a research fund is unique in the country - be it forthe private or public medical colleges. So far, eight research projects are ongoing.
• A successful breakthrough in research is the recent detection of a rare bacterium called Burkholderia pseudomallei in the soil forthe first time in Bangladesh by the researchers of the Microbiology Department of IMC.
• Several faculty members of IMC are the recipients of research grants from within and outside the country. So far it has received research grants from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh (MOSICT), Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) and Bangladesh Medical Association of North America.
• Inter-institutional collaboration: The academic and research activities have led other institutions to establish collaboration with IMC. At present, IMC has consistent research and academic collaboration with Dhaka University, BRAC University and Stamford University.
• The faculties of IMC are actively involved in collaborative postgraduate studies with other universities of the country. At present several students from Dhaka University, BRAC and Stamford Universities are doing PhD, M. Phil and MSc research work at IMC (DU 1 PhD, 1 MPhil, 1 MSc; BRAC 1 MSc; Stamford 4 MSc).
• Several faculty members of IMC have been serving as members of ERC and IRB of ICDDR, B and BSMMU respectively.
• Dr. Shamshad Jahan, Associate Professor of Obs & Gyne was awarded Ekushey Padak & Faizunnessa Chowdhury Award for outstanding contribution in the field of women health care in 2011.
